Which British universities' History Departments hold the best academic reputation ?
Q. Specifically, good reputations for research in Modern British History.

A. Do you want an undergraduate course - or a post graduate course. If post graduate you should remember that we do things slightly differently in the UK. In American Universities you choose the University first - do a general year for a PhD and then opt for a course within the University. In the UK you apply for a particular course - which has already been awarded funding. You will then, upon acceptance research into a particular area - so rather than choose the University you would be better looking at post grad. opportunities in an area of research which interests you. This applies to Science which I know a little about. For history you may be able to work on your own - but do remember that we are far less financially generous to… [cont.]

Is it bad to have two departments co-sponsor and event?
Q. This probably seems silly, but I want to make sure. My student group is hosting a speakers series (or hoping to host, rather) at our university and we need to have it co-sponsored by an academic department. The two departments that came to mind are the International Affairs and Poli Sci depts. Would it be out of line to ask them both to co-sponsor? I mean, I doesn't seem like it would be, but I want to make sure it's not like one department is stepping on the others toes or something like that... Thanks for your help!

A. No, in fact many events are sponsored by multiple departments. It's a great way for a group or department to pool money from several sources to afford an event that they individually couldn't get, but relates to all of those involved. Just make sure that when asking each department that you tailor your request to their department's goals and needs. And you can always say that you are contacting other departments about it. Departments working together looks good for the departments and the school. The big thing when working with multiple sponsors is to treat them fairly relative to their contribution. If they give equivalent resources to help you, they get equal billing in advertisements, press releases, etc. If their gifts are more… [cont.]

how many faculty departments don't need to secure any funding?
Q. for example, philosophy and english professors don't need any funding to conduct advanced research because their research just involves going to the library. what other academic departments are like this?
Asked by worldpeace - Tue Sep 19 21:08:49 2006 - - 1 Answers - 1 Comments

A. Actually, faculty department do have to secure grant funding. In academia, it is "publish or perish." To do so, much research is needed, sometimes in other countries. Also, the state does not totally fund a university, so grants assist in paying for overhead (electricity, etc.). Every seven years, professors are eligible for a sabbatical. They can take one-half or one full year to study in their field. This takes money, and here again the grants come into play. Grants fund their travel.

Q. Art colleges and Liberal Arts Colleges with Art Departments teach theory and modern art without good basic training in drawing and painting. My main interest is in Classical Realism, Contemporaray Realism, Academic Art,Still Lifes, and Portraits. Where can I get the skills needed to become a succesful painter ?
Asked by Big Guy - Sun Sep 17 19:46:53 2006 - - 10 Answers - 0 Comments

A. You should try an "atelier" school. They are popping up more and more. A good web site to see "approved" ateliers is artrenewal.org. Its the Art Renewal Center. I know of one in Rhode Island named The New School of Classical Art. Web site- danalevin.com. It is a very focused education, you will work hard and get results in painting and drawing that there is no way you could get in a regular art school. In ateliers you get individual attention from you instructor, you get to see how they work and run their studio. For someone who wants to be a painter- in my opinion- it is the only way to go.

In applying to an academic program, is it a problem if my letters of rec are from profs outside of my area?
Q. I am applying to an academic program. My letters of recommendation are from academic professors, but they are outside of my major/focus. For example, I am studying Health Policy and Administration and the letters of recommendation are from a Philosophy professor and a Demography professor. Both applicable to the industry, but not directly in the HPA department. Should i really have a HPA recommendation or should I be okay?

Ok so I have to answer this question for my ethics class but I need some help with it, University professors?
Q. are usually fairly bright, and they typically hold reason in high regard. but sad to say, university professors are not widely acclaimed as moral models. In fact, academic departments are notorious for being dens of intrigue and betrayal, and squabbling among faculty is comon. If that assessment of the moral status of university faculty is accurate does that count against the claim that rationality is the core of ethics?
Asked by famous amis - Sun Jan 20 21:12:56 2008 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Just because university faculty is generally held as the intelligencia it does not imply they are rational. As you said their actions (which speak much louder than their words) are not very rational. This irrationality extends to their poltical ideals which are generally pretty wacky too.

How do you format mailing addresses for Chile (South America)?
Q. I'm trying to put together a mailing list of academic departments in universities. I've been perusing the schools' websites and sometimes there is a postal code (e.g. 8340457 SANTIAGO), more oftentimes not at all. Like, where it says "mailing address" it'll give me a street address, city, and country but no code. So my main question is how do you format Chilean addresses. Second, are postal codes mandatory if you have all the other info?
Asked by Sophra - Mon Aug 11 18:18:06 2008 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Although there are postal codes in Chile, no one uses them and, to tell you the truth, most people don't even know they exist! So I wouldn't worry about that part of the mailing address. They are not mandatory. A postal code should be 7 digits long. If you want to find a postal code, the Chilean Post Office Service or "Correos de Chile" has a website that allows you to enter the address and it returns you the postal code. www.correos.cl There are some PO boxes (called "casillas") specially in Santiago, that have a coding such as: Casilla 999 Providencia. Anyway, an address would normally be composed by the name of the premises (or the person), the street name and number, the number of the flat or office, the "comuna" (only in Santiago), [cont.]

If our government keep recruiting those low academic achiever, how would the police department?

A. Police Department is suppose to serve and protect. However, right now the department only serving their interest. To serve, their give tickets more then , and protect those politician. Recruiting low academic achiever as police is not the main problems. It how the police department train them and the new recruits attitudes. I just check US Capitol Police recruitment web site, their min requirement is High School graduate. If our government recruit those low academic achiever is for solving unemployment problems. Then this might create more problems. Second is how our police department train the new recruits. What programs/departments are UCLA and UC Berkeley known for?
Q. I know that some schools have stronger science/math departments/programs, and some have stronger liberal arts/english department/programs. What is UC Berkeley and UCLA particularly known for in terms of academics and stronger programs for people interested in majoring in that particular field? Honest answers are appreciated. Please don't trash any of these schools or give me a biased answer based on school rivalry or what not. Thanks in advance. 10 points for best, thorough answers!
Asked by Harris P - Sun Aug 10 23:49:33 2008 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Both UCLA and Berkeley are large public schools and are very well rounded. They're not tech schools like Caltech or MIT. It's probably easier to list their weak departments than to list the ones that they're well known for, as almost every department is pretty highly regarded (Berkeley especially, I believe 35/36 of its departments are ranked in the top 10 ). Among the general public, the majors that stand out at Berkeley would be engineering (every engineering except Bioengineering) /business/economics/scien ces/mathematics. Those would probably be more well known than say, going to Berkeley for English (even though its English department is ranked #1!). Berkeley is also well regarded for law. I can't speak much for UCLA, but I know… [cont.]

What are some arguments for a federally controlled educational system?
Q. I, along with many people, think that the federal government should stay out of education and that educational decisions should be left up to the states, communities, and parents rather than a federal bureaucracy. But I am cognizant of the fact that many people oppose local authority regarding educational decisions and would like to extend federal authority in controlling academic curriculum. The Department of Education has actually never educated a child, but costs roughly $70 billion dollars a year; money which could actually be invested into education rather than a federal bureaucracy. While there are some arguments supporting NLCB, there are also strong arguments against it and we haven't seen an improvement in our educational… [cont.]
