A strum is the act of brushing one's fingers over, or strumming, the strings of a string instrument such as a guitar. A strumming pattern is a preset pattern used by a rhythm guitar. Compare with pattern picking, strumming patterns may be indicated through notation, tablature, up and down arrows, or slashes. For example, a pattern in common time or 4/4 consisting of alternating down and up eight note strokes may be written:
The pattern most typical of rock and related styles would be written:
Patterns may alternate or vary through one song. Examples of primary strumming patterns in songs (Dix, 1993, p.19-26):

Q. when i try to strum the guitar upwards, it doesnt vibrate correctly. just wondering why and if anyone could help? Asked by Miss Wisconsin - Sat Feb 21 01:00:42 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. As long as you're holding the pick correctly and striking the strings cleanly, it will work. It sounds like you're brushing your hand against the strings behind the pick as you make the upstroke. Try doing it very slowly and deliberately to try to figure out what is wrong. Greeting from Austin, TX Ken Answered by Ken C - Mon Feb 23 13:46:33 2009 What is the best way to learn how to strum the guitar? Q. I play the guitar but i am not very good with the rhythm. I want to perfect my strumming as it differs from song to song and i face a lot of difficulties as the rhythm that i play does not match with the song. Asked by neorosh - Wed Jan 25 04:02:49 2006 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. place your left hand across the strings to mute them, causing your stings to have a percusive(drum like) sound. Now find songs with differant rythms and just strum in rythm with them. Your stum is in your elbow/four arm and your rist. to begin with, your for arm should keep a steady 4/4 motion like this: 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and 1 and 2 and 3 and 4 and... the down stroke always lands on a number, the up always on the "and" or offbeat. Your pick should angle away from the strum (pretend the strings are your skin and the pick is the blade of a knife and you want to rub the knife across your skin without risking cutting yourself...make sense? Your elbow almost never changes this rythm though your rist may when you get more advanced. Answered by rastapunker - Wed Jan 25 04:17:38 2006 Why do you play chords with your left hand and strum with your right?
Q. At least in my opinion, it would be easier for a right handed person to play chords with their right hand and do the more simple strumming with their left hand. So why is it that you have to play chords left handed? Wouldn't it be easier to do those chords right handed? Asked by Saraaa - Wed Aug 13 09:59:42 2008 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments A. You might think that, but the right hand is extremely important. It is not just strumming up and down. It controlls the rhythm and the timing of the song. It needs to be almost automatic while you concentrate on the left hand to form the chords. That's why it's done that way. The right hand has to do tricky things without much thought.
